Sotoba Village
Summary
Sotoba village is a Call of Cthulhu module that has a team of detectives come into a village and try to find a missing child before it’s too late. However, the investigation takes a dramatic turn when witchcraft becomes involved, with the end of the world being at steak. Can you solve these clues and figure out who is responsible before the ritual is complete?
What I Did
For this project, I wrote a 23 page module for the engine Call of Cthulhu. (A more realistic game system with similar features to D&D) In this module, I wrote multiple backstories that have clues encoded into them. Alongside this, I wrote the basis of many of the characters. I also wrote events that occur over the timeframe that is given to find the kid alongside a work schedule for everyone in the town. I even wrote in some example drops and unique abilities for each villain to make each enemy encounter feel like a unique experience. I also ran this module for a group!
What I Learned
I learned a lot about modules and how much goes into the worldbuilding for a tabletop game. I learned how to write and prep characters and events that could be driven in any way and hopefully lead down the right path to solve the codes and uncover the mystery. I also saw how so little that was written into a tabletop can spiral out of control and become a main point of someone’s adventure.
